Waterfront Compact - Warehouse District / Harbor area / HafenCity
Do you want to step back in time to the early days of commercial shipping? Then join us on our two and a half hour walking tour through Hamburg’s historic warehouse district, the “Speicherstadt”!
As this historic part of the harbour is in good condition, you will be able to enjoy an inside view into one of Germany's most popular conservation areas. You will be able to relish the modern architecture of the “HafenCity”, whilst also being reminded of ancient times due to the historic building stock. We will guide you through a generic fast growing district with prizewinning new building structures and will show you where old structures have grown into a brand new areas.
We will start the tour with a great view over the harbour area and you will be told exciting stories about historic sailing and cargo boats like the “Rickmer Rickmers and the “Cap San Diego”.
In the old free trade area you will be welcomed by the smell of freshly roasted coffee and actors from the event museum “Hamburg Dungeon”, which is a walk-through ghost ride.
You will also be able to visit an ancient boiler house, which was the energy supplier of a whole district in the early 1900's and nowadays serves as an example of the district and the planned houses and buildings.
We will then proceed to the HafenCity and the historic harbour with its historic steam and sail boats. We will have a peek at the new philharmonic hall “Elbphilharmonie” that is still under construction and will then proceed down the fine boulevards of the HafenCity to the new shopping area.
Would you like to hear about the legendary buccaneers? If yes, we will most certainly tell you a fascinating story on medieval piracy on the North Sea. Whilst walking down the waterfront, you may also be able to catch a glimpse of a beautiful cruise boat.
