Albania is one of the youngest European nation states, and the last country to emerge from the collapse of Ottoman Turkish power at the beginning of the 20th century. The country’s short 100-year history has been turbulent, beset by war and characterized by profound social change. Yet Albania is still quite unknown and largely misunderstood by foreigners. Seemingly little has changed in this regard since the 18th century, when the great English historian Edward Gibbon described Albania as, “a country in sight of Italy [but] less known than the wilds of America.” Certainly, Albania’s cultural traditions might at first appear unfamiliar, even alien to the visitor; and the country’s history is undoubtedly complex.
